Bachup Assured v Other Methods
There are several methods of backing up information and there are positives and benefits of all of them.
The fact you viewing this website means you are thinking of keeping regular backups which is a step in the right direction.
CD Rom (and DVD) - the most common
Normally used by the homer user - but is usually not automatic and therefore gets forgeotten. Regular backups are normally not taken or are kept on site, which is no good in case of fire, theft or vandalism. CDs also need physical archiving. Not recommended for businesses
Positives: - Cheap
Negatives: - Normally not used regularly. Kept on site.
Automatic Tape Backup (or extra disk drive)
Usually associated with businesses or organisations. This is the first step to having a backup policy but our experience is that not all information is kept on a visible network drive (payroll accounts etc...). Often the tape is left in the machine on site. Those who realise the risk of keeping the data on-site normally have a member of staff remove the backup off-site which has other security implications, ie who has access to your files and are they readily avaialble in an emergency?. The task of taking the tape home normally falls on a low level member of staff. In SMEs Tape backup can take a long time and is often carried out last thing on a Friday night when staff are trying to leave for the weekend but are forced to wait until it is finished before the tape can be removed. This can effectively shorten the working week. THis type of backup does not take acount of remote users in the field or laptops outside the normal office environment.
Positives: - Any backup policy is better than none.
Negatives: - Only network drives backed up. Can be at inconveneint time. Requires staff to be responsible for security when taking off site.
USB Drives - ideal for the mobile user bust can you ensure they are used ?
Ideal for the laptop user but backups are often not done for a variety of reasons. Commonly lost due to their small size or kept in the same laptop bag or hotel room so if the laptop is stolen the backup goes with it leaving you without data.
Positives: Small and conveneint
Negatives: As an employer you cannot enforce their use. They are often lost or stolen as they are keptwith the laptops.
Positives: - easy to use, portable
Negatives: - Easily lost or stolen. Needs a understanding of computers to use. Employers cannot enforce use.
